So when professional sailor Shannon Falcone received the call from the PUMA Ocean Racing Team “to get his boots ready” due to the injury sustained by bowman Casey Smith during Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) it was “game on. ”. Yes, Falcone... Although he know he had big shoes to fill, as Smith was a key player in PUMA’s success on the Leg 5 of the race, he was encouraged and very excited about the upcoming leg, because it is a little warmer and it goes by the homeland of Antigua. Falcone who is a team member with ORACLE Racing for the 34th America's Cup, which will launch this summer in in San Francisco this summer, said that being chosen for the VOR was sheer luck. The 30-year old native hails from Falmouth, Antigua, grew up around the sport of sailing, making his debut at the tender age of 3 from Casablanca to Pointe-à-Pitre on my dad's 44-footer 'Caccia alla Volpe'.
